There's nothing like a distant mountain view. Secret Canyon is in the Secret Mountain Wilderness, an area of the national forest, and it's a place where you can't take motorized vehicles. But, you can hike into it! I hiked a little way into it for this view of the mountains around Sedona. I like this painting in particular for the sense of light and shadow.

This my final painting for the studio sale! There are still several paintings left for you to get for that special someone.

I love painting water. This little waterfall is on Spring Creek, not too far from my studio. It was an overcast day, so the light is soft. Can you hear the water?

Schnebly Hill in Sedona, Arizona, offers some fine views of Sedona's red rocks. I take my students there often. One of the formations, Mitten Ridge, offers some good morning shadows. I love painting that little "thumb" that casts a purpley-blue shadow.

"Moody Mitten" was painted on one of those moody, overcast days we sometimes get here in Sedona. It's alway a great opportunity to practice your skills of observation and subtle color-mixing. This is one of the mitten formations - there are several.

As I've said before, I love painting this view of Cathedral Rock. Here it is, late fall, and the cottonwoods are still showing some green but plenty of yellow, too. It was one of those rare, humid days that softened the light.

The Sedona area is full of interesting rocks faces, cliffs and yes, boulders! Here's one that separated from the main shelf some time in the distant past. What drew my eye to it was the warm, reflected highlights in the shadow area of the boulder. It was a very deep orange.

Sometimes we get some impressive clouds coming in over the Mogollon Rim, which is that high cliff you can see from Uptown Sedona. Here's a view from near Midgely Bridge, looking toward the rim.

The Jordan apple barn is in the Sedona Heritage Museum, located almost right downtown. Mr Jordan owned much of the land about a hundred years ago and planted most of it in apples. I enjoyed painting his barn because it is made of stone that has beautiful warm tones to it, and with the afternoon light, it is nearly incandescent.

I thought I'd post a few pastels now. This one is of late afternoon in what I call the "uptown trails" area in Sedona, just off of Jordan Road. I like it because of the loose strokes and broken color.

If you time it just right, you can see the most atmospheric blue filling the shadowed canyons of Sedona's red rocks. I caught this scene just right - looking over the foreground hill, blasting with sunlight, to the cool blues beyond.

We don't have snow often in Sedona, but when we do have it, it's a treat to paint. This day was full of snow squalls - fast-moving, heavy-bellied clouds dragging tails of snow. The scene is near Cathedral Rock, one of my favorite to paint.

Courthouse Butte in Sedona, Arizona, is one of my favorite features to paint. In the morning, it is backlit by the rising sun, but as the sun comes around, the rim lighting is glorious. In this painting, which was created on archival matboard, I really enjoyed working with the reflected lights in the butte's shadowed walls.

As most of you know, I teach a lot of workshops and participate in a lot of events. You can't imagine how many paintings I create in a year! This weekend, I was going through my Sedona studio and realized I need to free up some space. So, with that in mind, I've decided to start posting one painting a day, if possible, and that painting will be for immediate sale.

These paintings are sketches and demos, pieces that you won't find in my galleries. They will be either oil or pastel, and always unframed. Here is today's piece. This was a sketch I did for the Sedona Plein Air Festival last month. It's of the Taos Cantina on Main Street. It's one of the few knife paintings I've done. The knife paintings always seem to be popular, probably because of the rich color you can achieve with knife.

People always say that my paintings look better in life than they do on the web!
